FAQ Category: Tolerances & Standards

Can you bend parts with a custom bend radius?

SendCutSend does not provide a custom bend radius for any bent parts since it is set for each material and thickness. Take a look at the material page for your chosen material to find the bend radius by thickness, or check out the bending specifications table at the bottom of our Bending Calculator page.

Will my laser cut sheet metal parts be perfectly flat?

Our typical raw material flatness deviation is +/- 0.030” per foot in our laser cut sheet metals. Individual part flatness depends on the cut geometry and stress relief when material is removed during the cut process, so we’re not able to guarantee the flatness of finished parts. Learn more about this and how to

What are your tolerances for bending?

Simple, single bend parts will have a +/- 0.015” dimensional tolerance, bend to edge, while multi bend parts will have a +/- 0.030” dimensional tolerance, bend to edge. Each bend adds at least .015” tolerance. Bend angle tolerances will depend on whether the part is cut from sheet metal or plastic.

What is your material thickness tolerance?

You can find the material thickness tolerance for each stock thickness on the material pages in our Materials Library. Navigate to the material you need and then scroll down to the Material Details. Select your desired thickness and check out its specifications! This tolerance represents the possible deviation from the advertised thickness. Here’s an example of

What is your cut tolerance?

The cut tolerance for each material depends on the cutting process for that material and specific thickness. You can find this information for each stock thickness on the material pages in our Materials Library. Navigate to the material you need and then scroll down to the Material Details. Select your desired thickness and check

Will my parts be tapered?

Yes, it is possible your parts thicker than 0.250” will have a slight taper from top to bottom. The thicker the material, the more it will be tapered. SendCutSend’s state of the art laser cutting and waterjet cutting technology is able to reduce the amount of taper during the process, but it cannot be completely eliminated.

What are your etching limitations?

We have multiple etching limitations to keep in mind since we do not offer laser engraving or solid etching. Our etching services are currently limited to single line etching. Please note: single line etching is faint and shouldn’t be used for cosmetic applications.

What is the size of your laser kerf?

We compensate for all kerf and line offsets in your design. We change the beam position based on the geometry of the part, and we are able to hold +/- .005″ tolerance or better on most materials. We take care of everything so you don’t have to. Our fiber laser beam diameter varies between roughly 0.006″ and 0.010” depending on the material being cut, but you do not need to make any adjustments to your design to compensate for the kerf in the laser cutter.

Do I need to compensate for kerf in my design?

In short, you do not need to compensate for the kerf in your design with SendCutSend. We take care of it all and account for it on our end. You can be sure that provided your design follows our laser and waterjet cutting guidelines, the kerf won’t affect your design at all. If you want to learn more about kerf and some helpful tips for designing with kerf in mind, read our blog post on kerf in laser cutting.
