From Backyard Rocket Experiments to Defense Technology

Inspired by aerospace legends like Kelly Johnson, Ben Rich, Burt Ratan, and later Elon Musk, David knew early on that he wanted to work in either spaceflight or national security. At 15 years old, that ambition led him into rocketry.

“I decided I was going to build my own model rockets, from the active control system and electronics, down to the propellant.”

Unfortunately, homemade rocket propellant and suburban neighborhoods don’t always mix.” It led to me blowing up a lot of propellant in my parents’ backyard. It was quite a bit of drama for both the neighbors and my worried parents!”

His father’s suggestion? Build drones instead.

What started as a personal project quickly evolved into something much bigger. After sharing his work online, David began receiving emails from members of the defense community interested in seeing demonstrations of the hardware.

“Much to my surprise, many people in the Department of Defense and even members of the Pentagon were reaching out to me asking if I was running a drone company.”

The interest was enough to convince him to take the leap.

The First K9 Drone was Built with SendCutSend 

For David, SendCutSend isn’t just a vendor. They are part of his company’s founding journey.  

“When I was getting into drones in high school, my friend sent me a link to SendCutSend, showing off some aluminum parts for his rocket project.”

So, David mowed lawns for a few more weeks to save up and then placed his first order. 

Those parts immediately shifted his project’s direction from a fully 3D-printed body to a sheet-metal frame. Resulting in Valor, a tactical surveillance drone fully built with consumer off-the-shelf parts and capabilities rarely seen in hobbyist-built systems.

“That ended up becoming the first ever drone that flew from K9.”

Building Ahead of the Curve

Today, K9 is developing a growing portfolio of tactical drone systems and defense hardware designed to meet real-world operational needs.

Rather than waiting for policies to dictate development, the team focuses on identifying capability gaps before they’re even requested.

“We’re laser-focused on voids that most of the industry either fills with very expensive bespoke solutions or often completely overlooks.”

That philosophy has led K9 into highly specialized areas of sensing, targeting, and tactical drone deployment, where the company often solves problems few others address. 

“We’re building based on true end-user needs, far ahead of the curve.”

And when it comes to developing those systems, David’s outlook is refreshingly simple: “Build, Fly, Crash, Repair, and Fly!”

Built Fast. Tested Hard.

Rapid iteration isn’t just part of the process at K9; it’s the foundation of it. “Our goal is getting it flying as soon as possible and documenting what fails.”

David believes that the best way to create reliable products is to fail aggressively during testing. That mindset drives everything from prototyping to production

When products are destined for demanding environments, design decisions often come down to questions that extend beyond engineering calculations. 

“Would this button get in the operator’s way when ducking to take cover from enemy fire? Would this status LED give away the operator’s position at night and risk their life?” are only some of the team’s 4:00 a.m. considerations.

Understanding how the hardware will be used, even under far-from-ideal conditions, shapes every aspect of the final product.

Precision Parts for Mission-Critical Hardware

Before SendCutSend, affordable custom metal parts felt almost impossible to access. Today, laser-cut components are integrated throughout K9’s product lineup. 

“Anything aluminum on our drones is SendCutSend sheet metal.”

Frame structures, battery mounts, thermal transfer plates, radio enclosures, thrust plates, propeller adapters, and countless support components all rely on precision-cut sheet metal. 

In fact, 100% of their drones include a SendCutSend part—even if many of those parts are never seen by the end user.

The company also relies heavily on anodizing and powder coating to meet military durability requirements. “We test parts for saltwater corrosion, abrasion, and end-use wear, so finishes to the metal are important.”

Having production-ready components arrive fully finished significantly simplifies manufacturing for their small team.

Manufacturing to Scale

As a bootstrapped company, K9 needs manufacturing partners that can scale with changing demand. 

Whether they’re producing a larger batch for military customers or building highly specialized systems for unique mission requirements, flexibility matters.

In some cases, the team is modifying entire drone frameworks between production runs. One week may involve a configuration optimized for the Air Force Special Warfare unit. The next could require a maritime-focused design for the Navy and an entirely different application.

A Dream Team

While K9 develops technology for some serious applications, the atmosphere inside the shop is anything but corporate. 

With a small team of five working under one roof, from engineering and administration to production and testing, their shop layout is intentionally built around rapid innovation. Perhaps most importantly, though, the flight test field is right outside the door.

“Flight testing both production and prototypes happens literally four steps from our R&D lab.”

And the soundtrack blasting over the shop speakers? Anything from Subway Surfers to Gregorian chant remixes to EDM. As David puts it: “It’s my dream shop with a dream team!”

Advice for Builders

Ask David what advice he’d give other engineers and builders trying to move from concept to production, and he doesn’t hesitate: “Start Building!”

Perfection comes later. He sees many teams getting stuck trying to perfect something that doesn’t exist yet.

“The prototyping phase is meant for failing as many times as you can as early as possible.”

It’s a philosophy that helps K9 move quickly, learn faster, and continuously improve through real-world testing. 

What’s Next for Canine Defense Technologies

David couldn’t reveal too much about what’s currently in development, but it’s clear the team isn’t slowing down anytime soon. 

“All I can say is it’s very novel, uses a lot of SendCutSend parts, and I think it’s going to change how unmanned systems will be deployed and used in warfare across multiple domains, not just air!”
