Cleaner edges without the extra work

Laser tabs help keep parts secure during cutting, but they can leave small raised areas along the cut edge. Add detabbing and we’ll remove them for you, saving you the time and hassle of grinding them down yourself.

Cleaner finished parts

Remove visible laser tabs before finishing for cleaner-looking powder coated, anodized, plated, or otherwise finished parts.

Better fitment

Removing tabs creates a cleaner edge where parts need to sit flush or fit tightly together.

Skip the grinding

No need to break out the belt grinder when your order arrives. We'll handle tab removal in-house before your parts ship.

Design guidelines for detabbed parts

Following a few basic design guidelines will help ensure your parts coat properly and pass SendCutSend review.

Sizing & hole requirements

Sizing limits apply to flat parts before bending

Min part size (flat)	1″ x 3″
Max part weight	40 lbs

Max material thickness	.500″

Additional size limitations may apply based on part geometry and other services selected.

Part geometry and tool access

Laser tabs are removed using a combination of belt grinders, orbital sanders, and hand grinders. Because the tools need physical access to the tab location, some part geometry may limit our ability to remove tabs.

Parts with complex outside profiles, particularly round gears or similar shapes with closely spaced or deep features, may not be eligible for detabbing if there isn’t enough room for the grinding equipment to access the tab.

What to expect with detabbed parts

Tabs are removed, not the entire edge
Detabbing specifically removes the tabs left behind during laser cutting. It should not be considered a replacement for deburring or other edge-finishing operations.
Minor tooling marks may be visible
Tabs are mechanically removed using grinding and sanding equipment. Minor variations or tooling marks may be visible around the area where a tab was removed.
Better fit and finish
Removing tabs creates a cleaner outside edge, making detabbing especially useful for parts that need tight fitment or will receive a finishing operation.
Process order
Detabbing is completed before deburring and before subsequent finishing operations.
No top or bottom surface difference
Detabbing does not create an intentional difference between the top and bottom surfaces of the part.
Complex geometry may limit access
Deep, narrow, or closely spaced outside features may prevent our tools from reaching the tab location. Round gears and similar profiles are a common example.

Detabbing vs. deburring

Detabbing and deburring solve two different problems.

Detabbing removes the small tabs used to hold your part in place during laser cutting.

Deburring removes burrs and sharp edges left behind during the cutting process.

If your part needs both, you can add both services to your order. Detabbing is performed first, followed by deburring.

When should you add detabbing?

Consider adding detabbing when:

Your parts will be powder coated, anodized, plated, or otherwise finished.
An outside edge will remain visible in the final product.
Two parts need to sit flush against one another.
Your assembly requires tighter edge-to-edge fitment.
You don’t want to manually grind laser tabs after receiving your order.

Pre-flight checklist

File is in a format that we accept (2D: .dxf, .dwg, .ai, .eps; 3D: .step or .stp)
All holes and cutouts are at least 50% material thickness for laser cut parts
All holes and cutouts are no less than 0.070” for most waterjet cut parts
All holes and cutouts are no less than 0.125” for all CNC routed parts
File is built at a 1:1 scale, preferably in inch or mm units
2D files: all objects on the same layer, text converted to outlines, no open contours, all shapes united or merged, floating interiors bridged or stencilized
3D files: single solid sheet metal body, uniform thickness with a face at every edge, modeled at stock thickness with matching bend specs
All stray points, duplicate lines, empty objects and text areas have been removed
