How to export my file from FreeCAD?

If you want to export a part design file from FreeCAD, you can save either a 3D .step format file or a 2D .dxf format file.

Exporting a STEP file from FreeCAD

Before you export your STEP file, ensure that it meets our 3D File Guidelines.

To save a STEP file, from the 3D-View select (in the tree-view) the solid(s) to export and select “File -> Export”.

You can reference how to export a STEP file in FreeCAD’s online guidance.

Exporting a DXF file from FreeCAD

Exporting a DXF from FreeCAD will require some additional setup: FreeCAD Wiki: Draft DXF and Saving a DXF in FreeCAD

Saving DXFs from FreeCAD can be challenging since the process requires add-ons. See our recommended software to see if other options will provide a smoother workflow.

For general preflight, the free, open source program QCAD is great for checking 2D files. If you end up liking it, we have guidance on reviewing designs in QCAD here: How To Preflight Your Designs Using QCAD

Checking your uploaded file

After exporting your file from FreeCAD, you can upload your file to our website and check the part preview to verify that the overall dimensions are correct. All files need to be at 1:1 scaling in either millimeters or inch units, with no intersecting or duplicate paths.

We have more information about our design requirements here: SendCutSend Design Guidelines
