Laser Cutting FAQs -

We're here to answer all your questions. We've gathered a list of the questions we get asked the most. Don't see what you're looking for here? Send an email to and we'll get back to you right away – we mean it.

How quickly will I receive my parts?

For in-stock materials, we generally ship parts within 3 business days of receiving your cut-ready files. If there are any issues with your order, we’ll contact you right away. Our cut-off time for processing new orders is 12 noon, Pacific time. Orders received after noon will be started the following business day.

What's the largest single part that you can cut? How big are your machines?

Our raw material is typically sourced in sheets 48"x120" overall, which gives us a yield for single parts up to 47" x 118". We can special order material 60" x 120" if required, for a single-part yield of 59"x 118". Maximum size for freight/shipping is 47"x118". Freight shipping will be quoted at actual cost.

What's the thickest material you can cut?

  • Mild steel: .625" (5/8")
  • Stainless Steel: .500" (1/2")
  • Aluminum: .500" (1/2")
  • Brass: .250" (1/4")
  • Copper: .250" (1/4")
  • Titanium: .187" (3/16")

What filetype or file format can I send you?

To receive an automated quote, we accept Adobe Illustrator (.ai), vector-based .eps files, and .DXF files. For custom quotes, we accept most vector-based file types including .PDF, .STP/.STEP, and .SVG. We also accept some raster-type files. Converting raster files to vector files may require an additional fee. We do not accept .STL mesh-based files or photographs.

How do I setup my file for cutting?

Check out our Design Guidelines page for more information on setting up your files for laser cutting.

Can I send you a JPEG, PNG or other raster-type file?

Yes, we can work with some raster-type files. However, converting raster-based files to vector-based files may require an additional fee. When sending raster files, we prefer black and white silhouette-style images. We cannot work with photographs. Full-color files or designs with gradients will not translate to a laser-cut design.

Will there be scratches on my parts?

Possibly. Due to our manufacturing process, some cosmetic defects and scratches may be present on your part, especially on the bottom side that contacts the laser bed. Thick aluminum (>.250") may have a slight burr on the bottom edge. Contact us about finishing options such as ceramic tumbling, brushing/graining or Linear Ultra Finish.

If I send you some metal, can you cut it for me?

Possibly. If the material is hard to source, exotic or unique, contact us and we’ll provide you with a custom quote and material guidelines. Fixturing, handling and hazardous material fees may apply (these fees range from $200 to $1,000 per order). Our minimum sheet size for special materials is 12"x12", and it must be at least .015" thick. We also require that you send us at least 20% additional material for test cuts, calibration and layout.

Specialty materials we've cut:

  • Nitinol
  • Sterling Silver
  • Jeweler's Brass
  • Gold
  • 4130
  • Wire Mesh
